Cupcakes and Romance: Gabriela Cabezut

Hey there my faithful readers,

I thought that I would like to interview a writer of romance novels and came across ShyGabs. Many of us did read romance novels as teenagers and perhaps as adults as well. It amazed me how they were able to completely catch our fancy and leave a lasting impression on our minds and dreams. ‘Prince With Benefits’ by Shyabs is one such example. Gabriela is one who weaves a web of magic and romance, impressing her fans and bringing in many more under her magic. Apart from being a writer, she is also a gourmet pastry chef. So, here we go!

Me:How do your romance novels take shape?

Gabriela: I’m a dreamer…most of my stories come from an idea that takes shapes as I think about it, as I picture it in my mind, as I shape the characters and the backgrounds. It takes time, because if I don’t like it, I don’t post it. I think it over until I find something that I’d like to read. That would make me feel giddy or feel sad or whatever. For ‘Radio Love’ I didn’t make an outline. I just typed whatever came into mind. For Prince with Benefits, I knew what I wanted to portray, how I wanted to make people fall in love with Scott and Emily. And for ‘Turn Around’  I’m writing more cautiously. I’m trying to avoid typos and spelling issues and I know where I want to go and I’m taking my time to write it. But I want to think that as I write more, I learn more how to be a writer and even though I still make a gazillion mistakes, I want to think that I’m improving.

Me: How do you ensure that your novels don’t sound repetitive?

Gabriela: Well…actually…that’s a funny question, because I’m editing Radio Love and there are a few details that seem alike. I’m actually rewriting Radio Love. However, Turn Around is a completely different story. It’s romance but the main focus of the story is how Cassandra deals with her mother’s loss. It’s pretty personal because I lost my mother and so it came the need to write about my feelings. And Cassie and Nate are very close to me since they’ve helped me cope with a lot of feelings that are still difficult for me.

Me: Do you prefer portraying larger than life or real life romances?

Gabriela: People have told me that ‘Prince with Benefits’ it’s completely surreal. But I don’t think so. At the end of the day, Prince William or Harry are humans, just like us. And they must get fed up with paparazzi and I’m pretty sure that they’d both wished for a normal day at least once in their life. It must be overwhelming to live their lives. And that’s what I wanted to portray in my story. That royals are people, like us, living their lives, just like the rest of the world.

Me: How did your journey start ?

Gabriela:  Pretty much by chance. I came across Wattpad one day and I fell in love with the website. I started to read and read and then read a little bit more. Until one day, I found myself criticizing stories. After reading a lot, I couldn’t find one that I liked as much as the beginning. So one day, tired of scrolling through the discover section, an idea popped into my mind. Why don’t I write something? For me? So, I did. I started ‘Radio Love’ and started posting and trying the read for read and comment for comment thing and people were nice enough to read my story. And then, before I finished Radio Love, I started ‘PWB’ and surprisingly, people liked it even more.  I know I’ve been lucky to find such awesome readers that despite my mistakes, they still voted for my story.

Me: Do you feel that there is scope to bring about a completely new concept or perspective of romance to the world?

Gabriela: I think that as long as there are humans in this world, there will always be romance stories. There’s an endless list of different possible characters and situations that could involve romance. That’s why it’s one of the most beloved genres in books or movies. Who doesn’t want to feel tingles and butterflies? Love it’s one of the best feelings in the world, you feel elated and happy. Everyone wants to feel like that. Even if you don’t admit it!  😉

Me: How well do cakes and romance go?

Gabriela:  Not so well! 🙂  I started my cake business pretty much at the same time as I started to write. But I’ve been focused on it for the last two years, because at the end of the day, I get paid for that. But now that things are changing, I’m much more focused in writing and still doing cakes. And I love baking, it’s just time consuming, and I kind of need a lot of time to write. So, managing both is turning out to be quite a challenge. But I’m not giving up on either. I just love writing a bit more 🙂

Me: As a big fan of ‘Prince With Benefits’ I was curious to know whether the connection between the Scott-Emily romance and that of Prince William and Kate Middleton was a conscious one.

Gabriela:  It was. I can’t say that every girl has swooned over Prince William or Harry, but I have. And I have to admit to be one of those girls to be all over the magazines reading about Kate and William. I think they both went through a lot to actually be together and I wanted to portray that…adding the fact that even the Prince could fall for a girl like Emily.

Me: Where do you see yourself in the future?

Gabriela: I’m definitely writing. I’ve discovered that I love writing so much, that it has become a necessity. I’d like to think that I’m going to be publishing more books. But that’s not up to me. I’d love to. But no matter what, I’m still going to be in Wattpad writing, because that’s where it all begun.

Me: Who is your favourite author?

Gabriela: I have many favorite authors. My first favorite author was Jane Austen. I’m such an admirer for her work and even though I’ve read her stories countless times, I’m still a sucker for each and all of them. J.K.Rowling is awesome too. The way she created this magical world, it’s amazing. Isabel Allende, Stephen King, Veronica Roth, just to mention a few.  And a lot of amazing authors here in Wattpad, that despite being really young, they have written amazingly good stories that have made me feel butterflies and made me cry.

Me: Any piece of advice for aspiring romance novelists?

Gabriela: READ a lot. WRITE a lot. And keep reading and writing. When you find a subject that you are passionate about, write to yourself. Only for yourself. Don’t think if it will get published or not. Write something that you’d like to read. Something that would make you smile or cry or laugh. And keep reading…

Many thanks to Gabriela for patiently answering all my questions. I wish her a very eventful writing career and cake business.
